John McGahern was recently revered by the former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern (the former Irish Prime Minister) as Ireland's greatest writer when he officially opened the John Mc Gahern library here in Lough Rynn Castle Hotel in Ireland on the 9th November 2006. John McGahern was born in County Leitrim. He became a primary school teacher and then a full-time writer. He is now recognised as one of Ireland’s finest writers of fiction. Amongst his most celebrated works are The Barracks and his latest novel, Amongst Women. His works are currently on display in the John MaGahern Libary in Lough Rynn Castle Hotel in Leitrim.
